The first time I ate at the Chicken and Egg Roll on North Shepherd was because of the restaurant review in the Houston Press newspaper. It was delicious and I am so glad that I tried it. It was interesting to me because the cook works with a wok right in front of the customers and the food is delicious.
When I moved to North Texas, I really missed the Houston Press newspaper. I don't like their online version as much as their print version. Also, there are a lot less topics that pertain to me because I currently live six hours from Houston.
There is a newspaper in Dallas that I pick up every time I'm there. They have the Dallas Observer newspaper which looks disturbingly similar to the Houston Press. I did a little poking around on the internet and discovered that the same company that puts out the Houston Press newspaper and the Dallas Observer newspaper also put out a whole bunch of other alternative weekly newspapers.
Village Voice Media is a privately held corporation that owns the Village Voice, the nation's oldest and largest alternative weekly newspaper. They also own the the Dallas Observer and the Houston Press, among others. The layout of the alternative weekly newspaper published by Village Voice Media is a pretty standardized format now. It seems as though they input local info and just turn a crank to produce their newspaper.
